| When we first got married, Rich and I, armed with our various college degrees and loads of naiveté, had big dreams of getting rich and owning a McMansion with a big super-sized SUV in the driveway. Honestly, the concept of "living below our means" was completely foreign to us. Even though we thought we were fairly good with our money, we used credit cards and financed our cars. While we talked loosely of retiring early, we didn't take it too seriously. However, I changed my ideals when I became a stay-at-home mom to my two girls and money was tight. Researching ways to save money, I came across a book, which ended up really changing our lives. This book discusses how Americans tend to work a lot in order to earn more stuff, but then have to work even harder to maintain their stuff, until they don't have the time to enjoy the stuff they originally bought! One book led to another, and soon I was hooked on canning my own veggies from my garden, hanging up our clothes to dry, and other things to save money. My husband was convinced I was doing these things solely to drive him crazy, as he didn't buy into the save-now-to-retire-early thing. I knew I needed to get out a little more once I started rewashing my tin foil and zip-lock baggies. We have found a happy medium; we exchanged eating out, fancy clothes, and new cars for eating in, bargain shopping, and new RVs. Here are some of our recommendations for books and resources: To learn how to declutter, visit the fly lady website; she is tops when it comes to controlling your stuff, as opposed to your stuff controlling you. |
