| Why RV? There are a lot of reasons we prefer RV'ing over other types of travel. 1. Convenience - This is a huge reason we have an RV. We always keep our RV packed and ready to go on a trip. Some of the things we keep on the camper year-round are: paper and plastic, pots and pans, DVDs for the kids. Toiletries, clothes, and canned and freeze-dried food also remain on the camper during camping season. When we are cruising down the road and the kids holler "Mom, I'm hungry," we don't have to pull off at a fast food restaurant. I just cruise the 10 feet to the kitchen and whip up my favorite fast fare of Lean Pockets or Microwave Popcorn. 2. Cleanliness - Call my weird, but I get completely grossed out about staying in hotels and motels. I know the rooms are cleaned between guests, but I just imagine all the people who have slept in that bed before me. I know they wash the sheets, but what about the bedspread and blanket? Have you ever seen those TV news magazine shows (i.e. 20/20) that do the black-light examinations of rooms for body fluids? YUK! Or how about all the bed-bug infestations at hotels? One time we camped next to a very nice family at the Jellystone Park in Hagerstown, MD. She said she used to work for a very upscale and expensive hotel chain where she actually witnessed a maid clean an ice bucket with the same rag used to wipe the TOILET! Double YUK! I love having my own bathroom, bed, and kitchen when on the road. I know it's clean (or not!), and know the only bugs we will be catching are the ones the girls collect in jars when playing outside. 3. Saving Money - If you're not into RV'ing, you'll probably think the concept of saving money while RV'ing is an oxymoron. I mean, how can one possible save money with a depreciating asset that guzzles gas? Well, we would be paying for a hotel and food anyway if we were on the road. With an RV, we just pay a lot less for our overnight stay and food. When we are travelling from point A to point B we don't always pull into a big campground with a lot of amenities. We are usually so excited to get to a particular destination that we just pull into a truck stop or rest area for a few hours of sleep when needed. Some campers spend the night at Wal-Mart (blacktop boondocking). The exception is during the summer, when nothing feels better after a day of travelling than a swimming pool. The other way we save a lot of money is by eating in instead of eating out. I am very particular about eating healthy food (I also have a web store that sells nutrition supplements; lean meat and lots of fruits and vegetables (French fries don't count!) This is something very difficult to do when eating in a restaurant. Shopping at the grocery stores and cooking in the RV is convenient, easy, and healthy. We drink a lot of tea and coffee. I can make it in the RV with my coffee pot and microwave for pennies per cup as opposed to $1 or more for buying at the gas station. 4. Fun - A long time ago we decided that camping was a great way for our family to reconnect after the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Camping is one hobby that everyone in our family enjoys and looks forward to doing together. There are a lot of really fun family campgrounds with amenities like water parks, amusement parks, disc jockeys and dancing. However, I am a big fan of getting back to nature. State Parks are usually beautiful and inexpensive. There is nothing more relaxing than laying in our portable hammock under a shade tree and reading a book while enjoying the sounds of nature. The C & O Canal Trail is located in our region, with many campgrounds of different sizes near or on the trail. We can go bike riding, walking, or horseback riding on the trail and enjoy beautiful scenery and serenity just a short drive from Washington D.C. Another way we use our RV is when visiting friends. Many friends live across the Chesapeake Bay, a couple of hours away. We often park our camper in their driveway when they have parties, so we don't have to inconvenience anyone with messing up their bed- and bathrooms. This has become a New Year's ritual with us and some other camping friends. Last year we had our RV set up in a driveway with two pop-ups down in Pocomoke City, MD. When the kids (and the adults) had enough revelry, we simply retired to our quiet RV. 5. Pets - Anyone who has traveled with pets knows how challenging it can be to find a pet-friendly facility. With our camper, we can take our cats anywhere we go. We don't have to worry about pulling over to let them using the litter box or have a drink of water. |
