Camping in the Florida Keys is the perfect respite from the cold and snowy weather of the Northeastern United States during winter and spring. Actually, with average temperatures year-round in the 80's during the day, and 70's at night, visitors flock to the Keys year-round.
The Florida Keys are comprised of hundreds of islands connected by 100 miles of US Route 1, made of roads and bridges that traverse turquoise-blue water and mangrove swamps.
Tropical wildlife can be as dangerous as it is beautiful. During our visit, a woman was killed just 15 miles south of our campground when a sting ray jumped from the water and into her boat, causing head trauma. Pelicans, who look so awkward on the ground, gracefully play follow-the-leader during flight.
