Pie irons are great fun to cook with once you get the basics down.  Very
little clean-up, the pie is the epitome of easy campfire cooking.A pie iron is a
square cooker with 2 long handles attached. Pie irons can be made of cast
iron or from cast aluminum.

Make sure to check if your cast iron pie maker is pre-seasoned. Here are
instructions for
seasoning your cast iron. Use spray oil (like Pam) on the
inside of the iron before each use.

When cooking with a pie iron, the fire should have a spot for coals; the pie
iron shouldn't be directly over flames. Likewise, the pie iron cooker should
be about 8-10 inches above the coals or the bread will burn.

Remember; pie irons will be
hot! Don't let children use these things
unsupervised, and keep a hot mitt handy for handling the iron.

An easy way to let the pie cook is by propping the iron up by placing a log
near the fire and resting the handles on the ground. When cooking with a
fire ring, simply place the iron on a rack over the fire.

You may lift the handle occasionally to check the pie. It is finished cooking
when the crust is a nice golden brown color. If you cook like me, it is finished
before it gets black!

Probably the most popular recipe is for dessert pies.  Flatten two pieces of
bread. Butter each slice on one side. Place butter side against the iron. Fill
with your choice of pie filling.  Close the cooker, place near the fire on hot
coals and cook for ~10 mins. The pies are ready to eat when  the outside is
browned.

My personal favorite is a chicken and vegetable pie that tastes just like a
pot-pie.  Use pie crust (ready made saves a lot of time and mess). Add
spoonfuls of chopped meat, chopped canned veggies (can use frozen; just
heat ahead of time), and a spoonful of canned gravy.  Cook after spraying
pie iron with non-stick spray. When browned, top with another spoonful of
gravy. Yummmmy.

Rye bread (or whole wheat)
Sauerkraut
Corned beef
Thousand island dressing
Swiss Cheese

Pizza Crust
Pizza Sauce
Grated Cheese
Pepperoni

The possibilities are limitless; PB&J, grilled cheese, fluffernutters,
hamburgers (to cook the meat without bread).  I've even cooked
eggbeaters and premade cookie dough and cinnamon rolls in them.

Remember that cast iron shouldn't be washed with soap or you'll have to
reseason the iron. You can buy a camp cooker from the Link below:
