Blenders are not only for daiquiris or Margaritas, just like mason jars ain't only for drinking moonshine on the front porch! You can use this often-neglected kitchen appliance, and this underused life-saving glass storage container for easy and very healthy meals in a minute with little clean up. Did you know that regular pint-sized and quart-sized mason jars fit the blade attachment of most blenders?
Use your jar and blender for mixing pancake batter, blending eggs for scrambled eggs, and making bean dips for easy clean up with little mess.
Don't pay a fortune for one of those silver As-Seen-on-TV thingies that do the exact same thing as a $19 blender (or better yet, buy a blender for your camper at the local thrift store for a couple of bucks and spend the savings camping)! Here are some simple guidelines for the best smoothie ever. The secret ingredient is Protein Powder.
I like Whey Protein after workouts, as it is quickly digested; your body needs some readily available energy. If you want an easy meal replacement, choose a combination of whey, soy, egg and casein proteins, which will digest more slowly and keep you satiated until your next meal.
Easy Meal Shake / Smoothie
For a two-serving smoothie, add to a quart-sized mason jar or blender jar:
One cup frozen fruit of your choice (or yogurt) Two scoops low fat, low carb whey protein powder 1/2 cup ice if you don't use frozen fruit Splenda or Stevia to taste Water to cover ingredients
Blend and enjoy!
Some tips to consider:
** Buy bananas when they're on sale, then peel and freeze in chunks in a freezer bag. Likewise, load up on fruit when it's on sale.
** Whey powder can be purchased on my other website [shameless plug] Look for a protein powder that has only 1-2 grams fat, less than 5 grams carbohydrate, and at least 15grams of protein per 100 calorie scoop. This way you're getting your carbs from the fruit (Good Carbs!).
** Don't be afraid to experiment; my favorite is banana, peanut butter, and cocoa powder
** Use extracts like mint, lemon, key lime juice, banana, etc in lieu of fruit for a very low-carb snack
Did you know that a lot of lids that come on food items will fit a mason jar? We are fans of Classico pasta sauce, not only for the taste, but also because I can reuse both the jars and the lids for my kitchen creations. The lids fit any regular-mouth canning jar. I love to serve my children their milk in pint-sized jars, because if they don't drink it, all I have to do is pop a lid on the leftovers and place in the fridge for the next meal! My husband loves Folger's instant coffee; why he loves the stuff I will never understand!, but at least the lids fit my wide-mouth mason jars. Wide-mouthed jars are great for storing dry items that you scoop out of the jar: loose tea, rice, flour, etc.
